Are you tired of your monotonous life? Looking for an adventure that won’t burn a hole in your pocket? You are at the right place! Here is everything you need to know about the Kheerganga Trek!
Kheerganga is a spiritual site where Lord Shiva meditated for 3,000 years. There is a little pool on the highest point here with warm spring water. The water from the hot springs is believed to be holy with healing properties. The tiny pool of Kheerganga is what the village has been named after – which translates to ‘milky water of holy nature’. However the best thing about the Kheerganga trek is not the warm spring water but the gorgeous trek.
Covered by the mountains and surrounded by Parvati river. The silence of these mountains which are thickly covered by greenery and lullaby of the flawless river creates a feeling like no other. The waterfalls, the small villages and the peoplez who you would encounter while trekking will make the entire experience beautiful.
Everyone should plan the Kheerganga trek for various reasons; to begin with, the trek is very affordable and makes for a great weekend getaway! You can get any Volvo from Delhi and just take off. The trek begins at Bharsheni, the commute is free of cost as you have no other option but to walk. The stay is cheap as the nearby villages have wooden home-stays where food is cooked by the hosts and other basic amenities are available such as electricity and internet.
This entire part of Himachal Pradesh is untouched by the urban culture. One has to change a few busses to get there. Train and flight options are unthinkable. Another reason can be the length of the trek which is 14km and at times can be very tough in the mountains.
Don’t worry about the route to Kheerganga, we have tried to make it a little easier for you! You can reach Kheerganga by catching an overnight Himachal Tourism bus from Delhi to Kullu but get off at Bhuntar from where you’d have to board a different bus to Bharsheni. The busses are very comfortable. Once you’ve reached Bharsheni, you have to walk down the stairs from the dam construction site and trek along the mountainous path for almost 5 to 6 hours. Be prepared for the trek! You will come across some food joints. So stop, eat maggi and continue.
Don’t carry heavy backpacks. Only carry light overnight backpacks with a torch, a pair of flip flops, a swimsuit, small money, toilet paper and a very thin towel. Kheerganga is cold even in summers so carry something warm in your backpack. Please don’t try to trek up and back from Kheerganga in a day unless you want to get lost in the dark. You don’t want to be eaten by a Pahadi animal, do you?
Lastly, don’t throw trash around. Respect the nature, the locals and everything they have to offer.
If walking for 4-5 hours amidst rough mountains sounds a little intimidating, remember that there is a natural hot water spring just waiting to welcome you on the top surrounded by mountains thickly covered by clouds and snow. You only have to pay INR 60 per person and that’s it, celebrate your hard work!
