Have you ever wanted to walk on water? Then Chadar Trek is the right answer for you. You got to experience this adventure of a lifetime!
The Chadar Trek is the most adventurous and thrilling trek one can have. Deep in the mountains of the Himalayas, lies the frozen river Zanskar. The Zanskar river is quite steep and fast flowing. During the winters, the river freezes completely and is thus given the local name – Chadar. The path between the river and its valley is mostly a canyon, making the trek all the more difficult. Sheets of ice cover the river and makes commuting hard. The trek is quite long and takes almost 9-10 days to complete. The idea of carrying heavy backpacks and walking on thin sheets of ice with water flowing right below it makes it all the more thrilling. This trek is perfect for every thrill-seeker out there. The Chadar Trek, which always takes place in the winter months, is famous among trekkers as it requires a lot of physical work as well as high adaptability. The temperatures remain constant between 15 to 20 degrees during the day but falls rapidly to around -15 to -20 degrees at night. The days are spent trekking in the Zanskar Valley with spectacular views of mountains completely cocooned with blankets of ice and unexpected icicles hanging down and the nights are gone with spending hours warming up by a bonfire or balling up inside the caves of the canyon walls.
Why Chadar Trek?
The Chadar Trek is popularly known as the The Frozen River Expedition. The locals trek regularly in order to commute to the inner villages through this path. For anyone who loves adventure, trekking or an experience full of thrills, the Chadar Trek is perfect for them. This trek is best done in the months of January and February, when the Zanskar river is completely frozen. An approximate of 105Kms is covered and other than walking long distances, the trekker must also get accustomed to climbing icy rocks or boulders. This is one of the most difficult treks in the country but it is completely worth the money. The Chadar Trek is now endangered as plans of building a road directly over the river are in order which will help in accessing the villages in an easier way. So seize the opportunity while you still can!
